چکیده

We used tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy to study defect induced D-band Raman scattering in metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes with a spatial resolution of 15 nm. The spatial extent of the D-band signal in the vicinity of localized defects is visualized and found to be about 2 nm only. Using the strong optical fields underneath the tip, we photogenerate localized defects and derive a relation between defect density and resulting D-band intensity. © 2010 American Institute of Physics. doi:10.1063/1.3499752

Subsurface Raman imaging with nanoscale resolution.

We report on chemically specific, subsurface imaging with high spatial resolution. Using tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, we probe carbon nanotubes buried beneath a host dielectric media. We demonstrate our ability to map and resolve specific vibrational modes with 30 nm spatial resolution for dielectric layers with different thicknesses.

Nanoscale optical imaging of single-walled carbon nanotubes

In this contribution, we apply a microscopic technique that relies on the enhanced electric field near a sharp, laserirradiated metal tip that acts as a highly confined light source. The tip is used for the local excitation of the optical response of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) deposited on glass. We demonstrate photoluminescence and Raman imaging of the same SWNTs with a spatial reso...

Near-field photonics: tip-enhanced microscopy and spectroscopy on the nanoscale

Any detailed study of the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with nanoscale systems is limited by diffraction effects in classical optical systems. Near-field microscopy extends conventional imaging beyond this self-imposed barrier and is used to perform microscopy and spectroscopy with ultra-high spatial resolution. In this article we will discuss the use of the enhanced electric field c...

Nanoscale vibrational analysis of single-walled carbon nanotubes.

We use near-field Raman imaging and spectroscopy to study localized vibrational modes along individual, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with a spatial resolution of 10-20 nm. Our approach relies on the enhanced field near a laser-irradiated gold tip which acts as the Raman excitation source. We find that for arc-discharge SWNTs, both the radial breathing mode (RBM) and intermediate frequ...

Plasmonic lens focused longitudinal field excitation for tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

A novel tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy setup with longitudinal field excitation generated by a plasmonic lens is investigated. A symmetry-breaking structure plasmonic lens that is expected to realize a strong longitudinal electric field focus has been designed to generate suitable excitation for enhancement in a tip antenna. The focusing performance of the plasmonic lens is theoretically simul...
